It is big yet done on the river bank where the authorities don’t really bother you doing it there. The idea of "attacking" the public, not really there! I already saw the piece along with other graffiti. Sometimes I saw kids bombing there as early in the afternoon like no one bothered they do it there. Yup it is big, but size and nothing else were not enough, especially when you're doing campaign where majority people were the target. In this case, I would say that the one done by coolture and borbo really ‘hit’ the target. I already heard people been talking bout it even at the mamak stall while having coffee. I have friends who is journalist trying to cover this subject but cannot go on with it as their 'boss' doesn't want their paper to be seen as supporting vandalism[as they called it]. The same with, of course rat and vandarm pieces. Visible to everyone….. another slap to my face and whoever saw it.
I do have to say how a bit disappointed I am that he rejected to see me….heheheh. But, my huge concern [apart of high child abuse cases] were about this very mysterious street artist name Rat who I could say pioneer of stencil art in Malaysia. People made movie of his work, showing how big the impact brought-up by this guy. I just didn’t see him doing anything that bring huge impact since that famous ‘18?’ [http://youtube.com/watch?v=V3Gk7i4VYg4] somewhere in 2005 especially when he is the one who initiated this project. So I think he should have showed us more effort himself rather than asking people to send their works. Sorry Mr. Rat, I admired your view upon our society thru your work, your idea of art for social changes, your ‘kind of like manifesto’ of how the wall is cursing at us……but you seems like you’re burned out of energy…. You keep using your ‘aged’ stencil. There are lots of people, fans and even maybe rival that very eager to see more of you. New things! New stencils, new ‘fuck’ code on the wall. It’s been long since the last time that I felt like I’d been slapped on my face by your work, it is pain that I felt from that slap, but the pain is not on my face, it’s in my heart! It is a pain that somehow I wanna feel again. Thank you for all of your beautiful work of cursing people; hope to see more of you soon.
Dear Hannah… I do agree with you bout shooting at the river bank, I knew some who goes there coz they knew that they could do something big without really care if peoples would see it or not. All they care is doing ‘big’ no ‘risk’. But for this case…. I’m not sure; I don’t want to judge the writer.
About rat, I must disagree to some of your thought coz I really knew this guy. He probably bit busy with his work which limits his movement lately. But at least everyone can see that he’s still very much active both on the street and for this blog thou been burden by his work.
He also refused to meet me, but it doesn't disappointed me. I'm sure he has his own reason why he didn't want to meet you.....and me. I had learned to respect that. You should too!
I do love to see his newest artwork, some how i felt like he is not around anymore. KL wall surely be wasted without his work, but like chi said[i think she's rat girlfriend], he might be busy with something and at least he kept this blog updated + new look + new link + download able fonts. He still high in spirit. Way to go bro!!
check out these old KL stencil pieces that i found on stencilrevolution.com. it was posted almost 4 years ago! they've probably buffed them by now. has anyone seen these pieces up close?
You came to the right place Miss Katie. It is done by the very same person who started this blog. The first one were in Telawi, Bangsar. see the guy in green shirt in that picture.... He's not there by coincidence. The second and third one "was" around Maluri KL. The whole building already gone....been demolished.
The place on the river bank is safe, yet it is still visible to anyone who cares enough to take a look. Plus, if you could find a place that is safe for you to shoot and still kind of visible to everyone, why not just do it there!
To Hannah and Emily. I didn’t know you and my mom says don’t meet-up with strangers. hahahah. Kidding, I don’t see any reason why I should meet up with either of you two and several others. I prefer myself to be anonymous to people like you. Maybe once I had developed my trust on you, we’ll meet, which sometime took years and years!!!
To Hannah I am sorry that I’d disappointed you. I’m flattered when you say that my works give such a deep impact or a slap on you….I’m to flatter that I donno what to say when I first read your comment few days back. But I’m trying to catching-up my breath…..pretty tired now. Thanks for everything you say, means a lot. Or maybe you better start cutting your own stencil so that you won’t be disappointed by other stencilist like me.
katie, glad that you like it. but you made me think bout putting sex pistols version instead of frank sinatra. frank's version had made people felt like you do which is not my intention. i just wanna share part of my life by 'mocking' tun mahathir favorites song.
you kind of new in this blog, are you somewhere in Malaysia?
i would disagree, frank sinatra is perfect. the mood is just right, even if it wasn't your intention. it's a solid video. quite inspiring too. i'm from kay elle by the way.
Not like I'm a fan of him coz that is kind of the only song i knew by frank, but yea it's a great song. But i never thought that it would make people sad. I want to kind of inspire more to go stencils, not to get them crying. Personally I'm not really satisfied with the outcome of this first movie. I do received lot of mails from people who said they’re inspired…, but somehow I felt like they were more inspired by the sad emotion brought by the short movie. If I want to be moved by something, I would like it to be something that excite me, not something that would turn me to some kind of ‘emo’ kids weeping upon their stencils crying for social change thru art.
What is wrong with you aahh?? Peoples love it… they do. It does made me ‘weep’ but I did really inspired by it. Not just bout doing stencils or art on the street, but your short made me feels like I wanna make my own short, so naive, still pictures, stolen videos and audios, simple graphics. I remember we talked bout making movies bout street art and how we disagree a lot bout what you say, we were saying that we need this and that to do this and that and of course, lots of money. Yet, you’re so positives bout making a movie and you proves it. You prove us wrong. You’re so positives back then, but what is happening to you now? And what is wrong bout crying… you and your “male ego” ya???, boys don’t cry, bla..bla..bla.
Rat; I understand what you’d been thru; I just hope that you could stay positives. Stay on the street and be strong.
We're here because we love your art. Especially the kind that gets public attention. Whether it have a message or just be arbitrary and sometimes ambiguous (yes, ambiguity is fine) all we want to see is the application of your art to the street and general public. To stir up feelings and possibly make people think about things around them with a bit more of an open mind, or at least just question. I do understand your situation now, and I’m sorry that I look kind of forcing you, just can’t help fall in love to your works. Keep it up!

Still remember this?, "your tears change nothing, action does!". That is what i meant by my previous comment.
